Make this classic comfort food better by serving saucy, flavorful ground beef mixture on thick, buttery Texas toast. This recipe is quick for weeknight dinners and easily upgraded with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 8 slices Texas toast (thick-cut bread)
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet. Break the meat apart with a spoon and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Let the sloppy joe mixture cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken.
  6. While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas toast according to package directions, usually by toasting or grilling until golden brown and crisp.
  7. To assemble, place four slices of toast on a baking sheet. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toast slices.
  8. If using cheese, place one slice of cheddar cheese on top of the meat mixture on each slice.
  9. Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Top with the remaining four slices of toast to create sandwiches. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, brush the Texas toast lightly with garlic butter before toasting.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or ground pork for the ground beef.
  • If you skip the broiler, you can melt the cheese by covering the open-faced sandwiches with a lid for a few minutes.
