Make this addictive sweet and salty treat using only four simple ingredients. This buttery toffee over crisp saltine crackers, topped with chocolate, requires no candy thermometer and is perfect for holiday baking or gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 4 cups) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Bring the mixture to a full boil and let it boil for exactly one minute, stirring occasionally.
  3. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading quickly to cover them completely.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should look bubbly.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to melt.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers using an offset spatula.
  7. If desired, sprinkle with coarse sea salt or crushed peppermint immediately after spreading the chocolate.
  8. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  9. Break the toffee bark into irregular pieces before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, substitute milk chocolate or dark chocolate for the semi-sweet chips.
  • You can add one cup of chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) over the melted chocolate before chilling for extra crunch.
  • Store the finished toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or in the refrigerator for longer freshness.
