Make this easy, retro Hanky Panky recipe featuring a savory sausage and cream cheese mixture served on toasted pumpernickel bread. This is a simple, crowd-pleasing party snack perfect for game days or holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package pumpernickel bread or rye bread, sliced thinly

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, breaking it up as it cooks, until it is fully browned. Drain off all the grease completely.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
  4. Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly onto the thin slices of pumpernickel or rye bread. You can use a small spoon or the back of a knife for spreading.
  5. Place the bread slices onto the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese mixture is hot and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  7. Serve these easy appetizer bites warm immediately.

Notes

  • You can prepare the sausage and cheese mixture up to one day ahead of time and store it covered in the refrigerator. Spread onto the bread just before baking.
  • For an extra crispy base, you can lightly toast the bread slices in the oven for 5 minutes before adding the topping and returning them to the oven to bake the topping.
  • This recipe works well with crackers if you prefer smaller, bite-sized party snacks instead of toast points.
