Make rich, flavorful homemade tomato sauce using simple canned tomatoes. This quick recipe is perfect for weeknight pasta or pizza and tastes better than store-bought sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes (or whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Stir to combine all ingredients.
  4. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust salt or pepper as needed. If you prefer a smoother sauce, you may use an immersion blender to briefly blend the sauce to your desired consistency.
  6. Use immediately over pasta or pizza, or cool completely before storing.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality whole peeled tomatoes and crush them by hand before adding them to the pot.
  • This sauce freezes well for up to three months. Cool it completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers.
  • If you are using this as a pizza sauce, simmer for only 10 minutes to keep it slightly thicker.
