Make this bold, zesty Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce at home. This easy recipe blends melted butter with fresh garlic, herbs, Dijon, and spices for a flavorful topping perfect for steak, chicken, or bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened or melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. If using softened butter, place it in a medium bowl. If you prefer a dipping sauce consistency, gently melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat, then remove from heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic, chopped chives, parsley, dill (if using), Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes to the butter.
  3. Stir all ingredients together until they are fully combined and the mixture is uniform.
  4. Stir in the fresh lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Taste the mixture and adjust seasonings as needed.
  5. If you melted the butter, you can serve the sauce warm immediately for dipping.
  6. If you prefer a compound butter spread, chill the mixture in the refrigerator until firm, then shape it into a log or keep it in the bowl.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use fresh herbs. Dried herbs will change the texture and taste significantly.
  • This sauce pairs well with grilled steak, roasted chicken, shrimp, asparagus, or crusty bread for dipping.
  • To make this a compound butter, chill the mixture until firm, then slice and place on hot steak or vegetables.
  • If you want a smoother sauce, you can briefly blend the ingredients using an immersion blender.
