Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (Granny Smith or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
In a separate medium bowl, prepare the topping. Whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, nutmeg, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork.
Let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For the best texture, use a mix of sweet and tart apples, such as Granny Smith mixed with Honeycrisp.
If you want a gluten free apple crisp option, substitute the all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend.
Serve this warm apple dessert with vanilla ice cream or heavy cream for a traditional American dessert experience.
