This recipe delivers a satisfyingly crunchy celery salad, balanced with sweet apple, rich walnuts, and a simple, creamy dressing. It is a reliable side dish perfect for potlucks or summer meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups celery stalks, thinly sliced
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, cored and diced
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the celery by washing and thinly slicing the stalks. Place the sliced celery in a large bowl.
  2. Dice the apple and add it to the bowl with the celery.
  3. Toast the walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes until fragrant. Let them cool, then chop them coarsely and add them to the bowl.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to create the best celery salad dressing.
  5. Pour the dressing over the celery, apple, and walnut mixture.
  6. Gently fold all ingredients together until everything is evenly coated.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill the crunchy celery salad in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to blend.

Notes

  • For a mayo free celery salad option, substitute the mayonnaise and sour cream with 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt for a lighter texture.
  • To ensure maximum crunch, slice the celery just before assembling the salad.
  • If you prefer a lighter vinaigrette celery salad, replace the creamy base with 3 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar.
