A sophisticated, rich chocolate layer cake inspired by Capricorn traits, featuring a dark, structured design reminiscent of a night sky or constellation.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot brewed coffee
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon dark cocoa powder (for deep color)
  • Black gel food coloring
  • Blue/Silver edible glitter or dust for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the granulated sugar and mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix on low speed until just incorporated. Do not overmix.
  5. Carefully pour the hot coffee into the batter and mix on low speed until smooth. The batter will be thin.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare the chocolate buttercream: Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream, until smooth. Mix in the dark cocoa powder and black gel food coloring until you achieve a deep, dark color.
  9. Once cakes are cool, level the tops if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of buttercream over the top. Place the second layer on top.
  10. Frost the entire cake with a thin crumb coat of black buttercream. Chill for 20 minutes.
  11. Apply a final, smooth layer of black buttercream. For a structured look, use an offset spatula to create clean edges.
  12. For the galaxy effect, lightly brush or dust the top and sides with blue and silver edible glitter or dust to mimic stars or a constellation pattern.

Notes

  • For a richer, more grounded flavor profile reflecting Capricorn, use strong brewed coffee instead of water when mixing the batter.
  • If you want a mirror glaze effect instead of buttercream, prepare a dark blue or black mirror glaze and pour it over a chilled, fully frosted cake.
  • To represent the Capricorn structure, keep the frosting sharp and the layers even.
