Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 cup flour. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, prepare the topping. Combine the rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Mix these dry ingredients together.
  5. Cut in the cold butter pieces using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  6. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish. Press lightly.
  7. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Serve this warm apple crisp recipe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the best experience.
  • For a richer flavor, use a mix of apples like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith.
  • If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
